Ms. Dean, A standard cleaning (prophy) only cleans above the gumline. Because you have active gum disease (infection), you need Scaling and Root Planning (SRP) to clean the infected pockets below the gumline. Otherwise, treating them with a regular cleaning would be substandard care that worsens the infection. Leaving the infection untreated can lead to worsening gum disease, loose teeth, and potential tooth loss. We can only explain the need for this treatment, and it would be irresponsible for us to provide treatment this is not actually beneficial to you.
