Take Home Desensitizing - Dental Procedure Code Description
In instances where your dentist may wish to provide an antibiotic or additional pain medication to take home with you, the dispense of this medication falls under the jurisdiction of the "take home desensitizing" dental code. Despite its simplicity, this code can be confusing if you happen to be examining old insurance records and comparing them with records from 2013.
This is because in 2013 the code was revised by the American Dental Association to no longer cover drugs administered within a dental office environment and only include those medications suggested in the office, but consumed at home.
Medications that might fall under this umbrella could be over the counter fluoride treatments, oral analgesics for lasting pain, and chlorhexidine mouth rinses to name a few. It does not cover written prescriptions.
